Historical archaeology emerged as a distinct field in the late 1960s when archaeologists began to systematically integrate material remains with written and oral records to better understand past societies. This multidisciplinary approach expanded archaeological inquiry beyond prehistoric contexts and into the documented past including colonial landscapes, industrial sites, plantations, urban settlements, and more.
In 1967, a group of leading practitioners, educators, and field researchers formalized the Historical Archaeological Society to support the growing community of professionals dedicated to historical archaeology in the United States. The founders envisioned a society that would:
Advance field standards and methodology
Promote ethical archaeological practice
Foster collaboration between academics and field professionals
Facilitate scholarly exchange and publication
