HAS promotes high standards in historical archaeological fieldwork through training resources and technical guidance. Members access best-practice methods in excavation, documentation, and reporting that support ethical and defensible research.

Historical Archaeology

Historical archaeology is the study of past human societies through both their physical remains and the written or oral records they left behind. This field focuses on periods and places where documents exist alongside artifacts allowing researchers to combine excavation data with historical sources to deepen understanding of how people lived, worked, and interacted. Historical archaeologists investigate sites ranging from colonial settlements and industrial areas to battlefields and everyday living spaces, using fieldwork and archival research to fill gaps in the historical record and tell fuller, more inclusive stories about the past.
