The Historical Archaeological Society (HAS) is a professional, United States–based society dedicated to advancing the practice of historical archaeology through rigorous field excavation, ethical standards, research dissemination, professional development, and public engagement. Established in 1967, HAS brings together practitioners, educators, students, and affiliated professionals committed to documenting and interpreting the material record of historically documented pasts.
Our members are active in field research, academic inquiry, and community-focused archaeology. By fostering collaboration across regions and disciplines, HAS strengthens the relevance and impact of historical archaeology in both academic and public spheres.
The mission of the Historical Archaeological Society is to:
Support professional standards in historical archaeological fieldwork, documentation, and publication.
Promote ethical practice and stewardship of cultural and historical resources.
Facilitate collaboration among researchers, students, institutions, and communities.
Advance archaeological knowledge through research, training, and dissemination.
Engage the public with meaningful interpretation of the archaeological record.
HAS works toward strengthening historical archaeology by supporting responsible field practice, professional collaboration, and the long-term preservation of cultural resources. Through education, research dissemination, and member-led leadership, the Society ensures that archaeological work remains credible, ethical, and accessible.
Promoting careful excavation, accurate documentation, and defensible interpretation in historically documented contexts.
Supporting members through training, mentorship, publications, and opportunities for leadership and service.
Encouraging ethical responsibility, preservation, and meaningful connections between archaeology and the public.
HAS is governed by an elected body of officers and an Executive Board, who serve to uphold the Society’s mission, lead strategic initiatives, and represent the membership.
Membership in HAS offers opportunities for professional networking, access to specialized resources, engagement in fieldwork and training, and participation in society governance. Members receive exclusive access to publications, event registration benefits, and eligibility to serve on committees and in leadership roles.
